Westfield House Loughborough
Westfield House has staff that are trained to meet the needs of people living with dementia. Abbeyfield’s staff understand that dementia can cause Residents to feel fearful and frustrated, and so our aim is to develop a safe and homely environment which reduces anxiety and promotes wellbeing. Two staff members are dedicated to undertake such activities as life story work and reminiscence sessions which focus on happy memories and provide opportunities for meaningful and rewarding experiences.
Dementia Care Specialists
Themed areas located throughout that have been developed to prompt memories, trigger conversations, and enhance Residents’ experiences. Dementia friendly Residents’ kitchenette that can be used by Residents & visitors for accessing light snacks, drinks, etc. Large, bright Dementia friendly signage & lighting designed to reduce shadowing. Uniform flooring throughout, themed corridors with different coloured hand rails to help residents familiarise themselves as to where their bedroom is. Memory boxes at each bedroom door that can be filled with photos or personal items that are familiar to the resident. We have windows in our wardrobes – so that residents don’t feel anxious, we also have a Dementia friendly computer with a large keyboard for our residents to use.
We have a fully enclosed main garden & sensory garden, designed with stimulation of the senses in mind. We have seating in this area whereby a Resident and their visitors can sit out and enjoy the peace and tranquility of this garden. The raised beds are accessible to those with poor mobility and contain plants that have texture and evocative scents. Wind chimes add a further dimension.
Our main garden has some lovely patio tables with chairs and parasols so can be used by Residents & their visitors throughout the summertime. We also have a new greenhouse and vegetable area that is colorful, bright and accessible – Our Activities Organiser helped some of our Residents to plant the fruit and vegetables.
