Volunteers are integral to our home. They dedicate their own time to offer support and friendship to those who have chosen to live with us.

Whether they are assisting to deliver activities and events, or simply popping in for a cup of tea and a chat, these volunteers help to make Abbeyfield houses what they are – stimulating and warm environments. Younger faces offer varied conversation, listening to residents’ experiences and telling their own stories. There may also be people from our local community that come in to share news and stories. “I volunteer at Abbeyfields because it’s lovely to meet new people and help out where you can. It’s great experience for my future and I really enjoy it. As a Health & Social Care student, it helps me to look into different environments and helps me to decide what sort of career I would like to do.”

“After my husband died, I felt I wanted to do something useful, so befriending was an ideal solution. I love inter-acting with the elderly, they have such diverse backgrounds and such a lot to offer society in general.”

“Being a volunteer in the Abbeyfield is my best experience ever in Loughborough. During the several months, I enjoyed the love from all residents, staff and other volunteers. And as a foreign student, I felt just like I was not far from my home because of the love they gave to me. I would like to thank the residents for sharing their stories to me and giving me the opportunity to introduce my country and my life to them. Now, I have to return home and continue my career in my country, but I will remember every coffee morning and every game time we spent together, and keep these precious memories deep in my heart. Love you all in the May Mills House! Hope more volunteers come to the Abbeyfield. The residents need you, and I promise that you will never regret such an amazing experience in your life.”

“It’s a lovely feeling to give to others, bring sunshine to people’s lives. I enjoy creative tasks, so it’s rewarding to help the elderly with these. I’ve also enjoyed the music and movement sessions and compiled a CD for the Residents. Abbeyfield has a warm atmosphere, something which so many homes could learn from.”

“Thanks to everyone at Abbeyfield for having me as a volunteer, I had a great time. I used my volunteering experience to gain entry to medicine at Liverpool University. Thanks again and best wishes to everyone at the home.”
